The Chhatrapati Shahu Institute of Business Education and Research Trust, was established in 1976 by Dr. A. D. Shinde, a practicing Chartered Accountant and Professor of Accountancy and Taxation under the able guidance of Late Padmabhooshan Vasantraodada Patil, Ex. During his career as a teacher he was associated with the Shivaji University, Kolhapur and with a number of academic bodies and served the cause of commerce education as Dean Faculty of Commerce for a period not less than 12 years. During his tenure as a Dean, Faculty of Commerce, he tried to update the curricula of commerce degree courses and introduced practicals in commerce by creating a museum of different documents from banks, business houses and Industries.
Education plays a very important role in
growth of any country / area. Imparting of knowledge and wherewithall
of a trade to young citizens of a country can be a very rewarding
experience. The Chhatrapati Shahu Institute of Business Education
& Research has a proud record of successfully training a large
number of students in various fields. In fact, in the history
of management education, Chh. Shahu Institute of Business Education
& Research (Popularly known as SIBER or Shahu Institute),
Kolhapur, occupies a prominent position, not only in Maharashtra
but in the country as a whole. This is for three reasons . First,
as far back in 1976, the Institute came into force when not many
had visualized that management education would assume so important
a place in society, in the years to come, as one finds today.
Second, the Institute is fully devoted to the cause of education
in management and allied areas, which speaks of its commitment
to management education. Third, it has been conferred with the
status of an Autonomous Institute by the Shivaji University, Kolhapur,
with the concurrence of the Government of Maharashtra and the
University Grants Commission, New Delhi and the AICTE- a status
that is conferred only upon researching high levels of achievements.
Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur, after whom the Institute
has been named, was a ruler known for his vision to promote education
in the area under his rule. In fact, most of what independent
India today strives for, he had conceived and implemented in the
early twentieth century.
The idea of establishing an independent
Institute for Management Education under the Shivaji University
area, was mooted by Dr. A. D. Shinde, a renowned Chartered
Accountant, Tax Consultant and the then Dean of Commerce faculty
of the Shivaji University. Dr. Shinde's tireless efforts and
dedication, with a missionary zeal, coupled with the blessings
and active support of the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra,
Hon'ble Late Vasantraodada Patil and also of the Hon'ble Sripatrao Bondre, resulted in the present Institute
being set up. The Institute is a duly Registered body under
the Bombay Public Trust Act. It has received recognition from
the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, under section
2 (f) and section 12A.
From a very humble beginning in rented premises,
the Institute has progressed in leaps and bound to becoming a
leading educational organization in Western Maharashtra. Its campus
is spread over an area of eleven acres in the vicinity of the
Shivaji University. Since its establishment SIBER has developed
a track record as one of the leading business schools in Maharashtra
with the reputation of providing pragmatic solutions to the needs
of business and society at large. We are an entirely post-graduate
establishment where professional attitude is the norm for both
students and faculty.
Much of out reputation derives from our long
established MBA program. This provides an understanding of general
management through a blend of key concepts and their practical
applications, designed to enable managers to think and act both
strategically and tactically through a programme embracing industrial
visits and field survey, workshops among others. Various course
structures stress the integral nature of the key functional areas
and also the interrelationships between them.
