Kolhapur is one of the important Historical Cities in India. It was capital place of former princely state and also holy place known as Dakshin Kashi for the existence of Mahalaxmi temple. The early year of twentieth century Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur had tried his level best for the alround development of the State by establishing not only small scale industries but also his strenuous efforts for the education for masses. Chh. Shahu Maharaj made a legislation for the compulsory primary education in the State and to open the doors of higher education and established Rajaram College at the beginning of twentieth century.
Kolhapur State was the origine of small scale Industries and the first industry was established in Kolhapur. With this background, Kolhapur in recent years has made notable development in Trade, Commerce and Industry and has a strong base of co-operative movement. In and around Kolhapur. There are many Co-operative Sugar Factories, agricultural Co-operative Societies, Small scale Industries, textile Industry at Ichalkaranji, export oriented Spinning Mills, largest 'GUR' (Jaggery) market, Tobacco Producing Centre. Thus Kolhapur has become commercial capital of Western Maharashtra.

During early sixties, there was requirement of Managers at top and middle level to manage the industry, Sugar Mills, Spinning Mills, Textile Mills and other business houses. A dearth of such trained personnel began to be felt in the western Maharashtra and became fairly acute in early seventies. The Institutes providing Management education were very few and were located only in bigger cities like Pune and Mumbai.

This gap of trained and skilled personnel was well anticipated and understood by Professor Dr. A.D.Shinde; a renowned Tax Consultant and Financial Advisor, who has wide teaching experience at Undergraduate and Post Graduate level. It is he, who realised the need of establishment of business school at Kolhapur. His dream of training youth to face the challenges of new millennium and the twenty first century came into existence, when he registered a Chariatable Trust "Chhatrapati Shahu Institute of Business Education and Research Trust".

Subsequently in June, 1976, he started an institute by name "Chhatrapati Shahu Central Institute of Business Education and Research" (popularly known as SIBER). The SIBER is affiliated to Shivaji University. The Founder President of the trust was, again, another great visionary Late Vasantraodada Patil, the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

From a very humble beginning, the Institute grew in stature and size. It was shifted to its present campus in 1980, near the Shivaji University. The Institute is located on 4.65 hectares of land. It is a beautiful campus which can be proud of legitimately spacious academic and administrative blocks, hostels, guest house, staff quarters, working women's hostel, a very well stocked, growing and a spacious library, and a play ground etc.

SIBER which started with MBA, DBM and M. Com. Courses and has slowly grown as a prestigious Post Graduate Institute in western Maharashtra. Presently, it is conducting Post Graduate courses in Business Management, Social Work, Computer Science, Information Technology, Applied Sciences, Non Conventional College etc. SIBER is also recognised for Ph.D. and M.Phil. programmes in the subjects of Management, Social Work, Environment Management, Commerce and Economics and Computer Science.

Professor Dr. A. D. Shinde has a wide exposure to the University system. Professor Shinde was Dean of the Commerce and Management faculty for nine years and Members of Executive Council for more than fifteen years and Member of Academic Council, Commerce faculty, various Boards of Studies and many Committees of the Shivaji University.
Professor Shinde with his tireless efforts and dedication with missionary zeal has built this institute on strong financial footings and is one of the best Management Institutes in the country where students from all parts of India are taking education. SIBER is also approved by AICTE and accredited by National Board of Accreditation (AICTE), New Delhi, awarding "B" (Very Good) grade recently.

The SIBER has maintained high academic standard, which is evident from the placement of the MBA, MCA and MEM students. Inspite of continued persuasions from the Government of Maharashtra,, University Grants Commission and Universities, no institution in the State was coming forward for autonomous status. SIBER in 1994 submitted its proposal to the Shivaji University, University Grants Commission for getting autonomous status. State Government, after careful scrutiny of the report of the Shivaji University Visiting Team; approved the proposal of the SIBER and recommended the same to the University Grants Commission.

The Expert Committee of the University Grants Commission visited the SIBER and after detailed inspection in respect of its academic achievement, infrastructural facilities and financial position submitted its report to the University Grants Commission, approved the proposal of SIBER and conferred the autonomous status on the SIBER. Thus SIBER became the first autonomous Institution in the State of Maharashtra. The autonomous status has also been endorsed by the AICTE. Thus from June 1995 to date SIBER is enjoining autonomous status. Trustees of the SIBER includes top academicians like ex-Vice-Chancellors, Professors, ex-member of Public Service Commission, Social Works, etc.

SIBER, which started with MBA/DBM courses has spread its wing and presently it is imparting instructions for following courses.

  • 1) Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • 2) Master of Computer Applications (MCA)
  • 3) Master of Environment Management (MEM)
  • 4) Master of Social Work (MSW)
  • 5) Diploma in Business Management (DBM)
  • 6) Diploma in Computer Management (DCM)
  • 7) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) (Commerce and Management)
  • 8) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) (Social Work)
  • 9) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) (Sociology)
  • 10) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) (Commerce and Management)
  • 11) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) (Social Work)

SIBER has highly qualified and experienced faculty. The total number of faculty is 52 full timers, 8 part timers and visiting faculty numbers 35. Full time faculty includes 2 Professors, 8 Readers and 30 lecturers.

SIBER faculty has, so far, successfully supervised the dissertations of 44, Ph.D. and 284 M.Phil. students. Presently 44 and 69 students have registered their names for Ph.D. and M.Phil. programme respectively in various subjects under the supervision of the SIBER faculty.

The progress achieved by SIBER has also culminated into it being approved by AICTE.

SIBER's alumni is spread high and wide. Its students are doing very well in their respective chosen fields. This had always encouraged the Institute to strive for still higher achievements.

The achievements of the Institute have also found reflection in the award of a "B" (very good) grade by the NBA of the AICTE to its MBA course, after visit of its Peer Committee to the Institute in February 2002.

Until 1995 the institute being affiliated to the Shivaji University, was conducting the courses until May 1995 as framed by the University bodies. The syllabi of different courses of the University were found to be outdated in view of the changing trends and environment in business and industry and Goal policies. The institute opted for autonomy realizing the need to revise and update the courses continuously to suit the changing needs of the society particularly the commerce and industries and changing industrial and economic policies in the country.
