PEDAGOGY OF TEACHING
 

Classroom Teaching

Classroom Teaching consisted regular lectures, they were also supplemented by audio visual aids, OHP, Seminars, Field Work Conferences, Group Discussion, Guidance, Counselling etc. The remedial course for academically weak students has been started since last three years in two subjects like Statistics and English Grammar and Communication skills, once in a week as extra coaching by the faculty members. Many students were benefited

Concurrent Field Work

Apart from imparting theoretical knowledge, Social Work education lays lot of emphasis on field work practicum.  In order to develop the Social work skills students were placed in different social agencies for their concurrent field work.  Before the actual placements, students were given an orientation to give them exposure to the functioning of different agencies and application of social work education in fields.  Four separate Orientation visits were arranged for both MSW I and MSW II students.  Subsequently, regular placements in different agencies were done for their concurrent field work. Accordingly 21 Agencies were selected for first year students and 19 Industrial setups for MSW-II (HRM& LW), 20 Agencies for MSW-II (URCD) and 10 Medical and Psychiatric setups for MSW-II (MPSW). The students had to visit their respective agencies on every Wednesday and Friday and work/observe the activities of the agency for 15 hours a week, through out the academic year. Each student was placed in appropriate agency and supervised both by Agency and Faculty Supervisor of the department.

Project Work:

The department also encourages research activities. The students of MSW II have an optional subject Project work or women and society. This year 74 students had opted for project.  36 students were from MSW II HRM&LW, 24 students were from MSW II URCD and 14 were from MSW II MPSW. This in itself shows the inclination of faculty and students towards research. Students are encouraged and guided by the faculty to undertake the project.

Block Placement:
         
          Every year around 30 students undertake Block Placement Programme, which is a  30 days training programme during summer vacation.  All these students belonged to MSW Final Year with different specializations like Human Resource Development & Labour Welfare, Urban and Rural Community Development and Medical and Psychiatric Social Work.

Permanent Placement:

As far as job placement is concerned about 70% of students are absorbed in different organizations in various positions like Management Trainees, Project Executive Trainees, Counsellors and Medical and Psychiatric Social Workers.  Faculty members also contact organizations and arrange for campus interviews.  Department takes all the necessary initiatives for placement of students and also maintains a records of placement of Alumni.

Alumni Meet:

          Alumni meetings are organized depending upon availability of former students. As a rule at least once in a year such meetings are organized to review the career experiences with academic perspective.

FIELDWORK ACTIVITIES    

           The M.S.W. course emphases on concurrent field work wherein the students are expected to learn theory and practice it simultaneously. As a part of the curriculum for concurrent field work students were placed in various Social Welfare Agencies Governmental and Non-Governmental to get exposure to practical aspects of social work with the help of this students developed their skills in organizing and conduction welfare activities and programmes. Students were also trained to organize various activities like social awareness, training, research work, case studies, group activities, community development programmes etc. All the activities mentioned below were organized in field/agency by the students of Social Work department  as part of learning process every year through  their active participation and the guidance of the faculty members.

1.          SURVEY ACTIVITIES:

-  A mini project on socio-economic conditions and nutritional status of slums was undertaken by the students placed for field work at Rajendra -Nagar and Sudhakar Joshi Nagar Slums.
-   MSW-I students participated in a literacy campaign for villages by the students placed in Prubudh Bharat High School, Balkalyan Sankul, Pratham and Rajendranagar Slum.

2. SOCIAL EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

Awareness Generation Programme:

  1. Various awareness Programmes, guest lectures on addiction and alcoholism were organized for all the residents of Sudhakar Joshi Nagar, Swadhar Nagar and Rajendranagar Slums.

General Health Check-up and Blood Donation:

  1. General Health Check-up camps and Blood Donation Camps were organized in the institute as well as in community by MSW-II (Medical  and Psychiatric Social Work) students.

Sports, Cultural and Recreational Activities:

Recreational Activities:

Various recreational activities like Singing competition, Rangoli Competition,  GK, Coin recognition for Blind Children, various sports activities like  Musical Chair competition, KHO KHO, Essay, Drawing Competition, Laughing Competition for women also various recreational activities on occasion of Ganesh festival were arranged for inmates and residents of  Tejaswini Reception Centre for women, Kolhapur,Bal Kalyan,Girls observation home, Blind School, VM Lohia school for Deaf and Dumb, Prabudh Bharat High school, Rajendranagar Slum Takala Slum and kripamayee Hospital etc.


         
Prize Distribution Functions:


Prize distribution functions and send off function were arranged in Bal Kalyan, Blind School, Prabudh Bharat High school, Rajendranagar Slum and Takala Slums infact, in all the agencies to distribute away the prizes for the various activities mentioned in the above agencies.

FACULTY ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMES.
         
For upgrading the current development in the subject, Department  deputed faculty to participate in academic development related activities like Refresher Courses, Orientation Course, National Seminars and Workshops etc. Most of the faculty attended and got the benefit of the above programme under CPE Programmes while a few of faculty attended similar training programme, seminars and conferences but either self sponsored or sponsored by the respective agencies or institutes they visited.
