HISTORY OF DEPRTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT
(Established in 1987)
Industrial growth and economic stability are the vital backbone of any country. Due to the industrial growth the GDP of India has tremendously increased during the past few decades. As a result of indiscriminate use of natural resources and industrial development, variety of environmental problems has emerged on local, regional and global scale and has acquired new dimensions. Everywhere in the world, the environment is changing as a result of pollution and loss of natural resources (water, land, air, flora and fauna). Considering the population growth rate, it is need of time to explore all possible ways to achieve self-sufficiency and sustainability.
The Founder of Chhatrapati Shahu Institute of Business Education and Research (SIBER), Kolhapur, Professor Dr. A. D. Shinde, visualized the above-mentioned facts and conceived the idea of initiating an integrated course in Environment Management. This idea was transformed into a reality by way of starting the course of Master of Environment Management (M.E.M.). At that time it was first course of this kind in India.
The DEM’s Environmental Laboratory was duly recognized by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board as a Standard Laboratory under Section 17(2) of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 on 15th May 1993 and 23rd June 1994, respectively.
