The P.G. Department of Environmental Management is empanelled with Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) for conducting projects on Environmental Studies since January 2005 (Letter enclosed as Annexure – V).
(iii) Research and Development Activities:
The staff members of P.G. Department of Environmental Management are engaged in research activities related to Environmental Sciences. Apart from this, the Department is also undertaking sponsored projects for testing of water and wastewater, air, noise, etc. for various industries such as sugar, textile and mining. The Department also undertakes preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) reports for mining industries. One such project entitled Environmental Impact Assessment for Mogalgad Bauxite Mine, Tq. Chandgad, Dist. Kolhapur, Maharashtra State, has been approved by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), New Delhi. The detailed list of sponsored projects is given in Annexure – VI.
The Department has successfully completed the World Bank assisted “Jalswarajya Project” (100% testing of Public Drinking Water Sources) of Sindhudurg District, funded by the Govt. of Maharashtra.
(iv) Scope of expansion:
The Environmental laboratory plans to extend its consultancy services and R&D activities to more industries and other academic institutions and thus strengthening interdisciplinary collaborative work in Environmental Science.
(v) Other field of interest:
Since 1997 the P.G. Department of Environmental Management has been organising National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The main objective of this campaign is to create awareness among the school students, teachers, farmers, mid-level managers and workers from the industries and layman on environmental pollution and control measures.
